Can you breed Otocinclus?

Breeding. Otocinclus catfish have been bred in tanks. They breed in a similar fashion to Corydoras, the female rushes around pursued by her male and lays groups of 3-6 eggs on plant leaves, bogwood or even the aquarium glass.

How many eggs do Otocinclus have?

Otos should hatch in 3 to 4 days at 75F. The eggs can vary from transparent, to cream, to yellow-green in color. The average spawning will have 20 to 40 eggs. The baby fish will live on micro-organisms in the tank for the first week, then graduate to algae.

Can I keep 3 Otocinclus together?

The seventeen species of Otocinclus (often called Otos) are often kept in hobbyists’ aquariums to control algae. Although they are often purchased solely for algae control, Otos are social and should not be kept in groups of less than three.

Do Ottos breed in captivity?

Breeding. These aren’t the easiest fish to breed in captivity, but it can be done. It all depends on how picky your fish are, you will need to get lucky. Conditions will need to be perfect, meaning that the tank needs to be clean and they have a nutritious diet.

How do you feed OTOS?

An Otocinclus feeds on soft algae buildup growing on hard surfaces of the tank. That’s why its important to make sure the tank is clean, but not “too clean”. Otocinclus food can also include supplements such as algae wafers and even some fresh vegetables like green zucchini slices.

Do Otocinclus breed easily?

Otocinclus do not typically mate easily but a high protein diet can influence your fish into mating. Otocinclus lay eggs all around the tank on plants. If you are looking to breed, you should have aquarium plants in your breeding tank. Water parameters are also essential to a successful breeding.

Do OTOS eat algae wafers?

Algae wafers are supplied, however, the sheer number of Otocinclus is too many to feed correctly. First, make sure you have algae in the tank for them to pig out on when you get them home. After a couple weeks of poor feeding, they’re plenty hungry!

What temperature do Otocinclus like?

Otos prefer a stable pH, which is neutral to slightly acidic (6-7.5) and a water temperature between 72-82°F (22-28°C). Stock your tank with plants (see more info below) and perform weekly 25-30% water changes to help keep your water as clean as possible.
