Can your water break and not feel pain?
You’ll typically start having contractions shortly after your water breaks. But in some cases, your water breaks — and then nothing. This can be perfectly normal and might mean your body will just need some time to kick into labor.
Can your water break without you knowing?
Most often, your water won’t break until you’re well into labor (it happens prior to the onset of labor only about 8% to 10% of the time).1 Still, the fear is real that you won’t know the difference between amniotic fluid and urine.
How can you tell if your water broke while peeing?
Most likely, you’ll notice that your underwear is wet. A small amount of fluid probably means that the wetness is vaginal discharge or urine (no need to feel embarrassed — a little urine leakage is a normal part of pregnancy).

The main concern of your water breaking early is infection for both you or your baby. While more and more research is showing that longer windows of time may be safe, it’s true that there is a standard of 24 hours in many medical settings.
Does baby move more after water breaks?
Pressure – Once the water breaks, some people will feel increased pressure in their pelvic area and/or perineum. Water in an intact amniotic sac acts as a cushion for baby’s head (or the presenting part of baby). When the cushion is gone, baby will move down further causing pressure. All of this is normal.

Baby’s movement in utero can also cause a sudden gush, as can a contraction. If your amniotic sac breaks forcefully (for example, during a strong contraction and/or when baby slips into a lower position), the resulting gush can also be forceful.

If your water breaks and is greenish/brown, foul smelling or accompanied by other signs of infection. In most situations, your water breaking as an onset of labor is no reason to rush in to the hospital or birth center.

But this isn’t the movies and it’s probably 2am (little known fact: waters most often break at night when you are in bed sleeping). You might get up and check what’s going on, feel excited – even wake your partner to say ‘the baby’s coming’ just to have someone to share the news with.
Can your water break while sleeping?
Sometimes, water breaks while you’re sleeping. If you’re concerned about flooding the bed, consider protecting your mattress with a waterproof cover.
