What is Iophen used for?

This combination medication is used to temporarily treat coughing and chest congestion symptoms caused by the common cold, flu, or other breathing illnesses (e.g., sinusitis, bronchitis). Guaifenesin is an expectorant that helps thin and loosen mucus in the lungs, making it easier to cough up the mucus.

What is Iophen NR?

Iophen-C NR is a combination medicine used to treat cough and chest congestion caused by allergies, the common cold, or the flu. Iophen-C NR will not treat a cough that is caused by smoking, asthma, or emphysema.

Who should not take an expectorant?

Do not use in children aged less than twelve years. May not be suitable for people with a persistent cough due to asthma, bronchitis, emphysema, or smoking, or who have a cough that is producing excessive amounts of phlegm.

How long can you take an expectorant?

Do not take this medication for more than 7 days unless your doctor tells you to do so. Tell your doctor if your condition lasts longer than 7 days. If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember.

Are expectorants safe?

Expectorants are drugs or natural chemicals that may help loosen and dislodge mucus from the airways. Further studies are still necessary to prove their effectiveness. According to the FDA, guaifenesin is the only safe and effective expectorant on the market.

Can mucus get stuck in your lungs?

Mucus buildup in the lungs can be cased by infection, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), smoking, cystic fibrosis, allergies, bronchiectasis, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Is it OK to take an expectorant at night?

Expectorants are better for breaking up wet, productive coughs, but don’t take them near bedtime. If a wet cough is plaguing you, take a suppressant that includes a decongestant, which can provide relief without exacerbating your cough.
