What is patellofemoral cartilage?
A patellofemoral cartilage injury is damage to the articular cartilage or connective tissue that allows the knee to glide easily within the trochlear groove. It can be caused from overuse, patella instability or knee trauma. This can lead to osteoarthritis in the knee.
What is the function of the Femoropatellar joint?
The patellofemoral joint is where the back of your patella (kneecap) and femur (thigh bone) meet at the front of your knee. It’s involved in climbing, walking on an incline, and several other knee movements.
Does patella have cartilage?
The back of the patella is covered with smooth cartilage. This helps the patella to glide over the lower part of the thighbone (femur) when you straighten your leg.
Where is the Femoropatellar joint?
The patellofemoral joint is a synovial joint between the condyles of the femur and the articular surface of the patella. It is part of the knee joint.
What is patellofemoral joint osteoarthritis?
Patellofemoral arthritis affects the underside of the patella (kneecap) and the channel-like groove in the femur (thighbone) that the patella rests in. It causes pain in the front of your knee and can make it difficult to kneel, squat, and climb and descend stairs.
What are the two articulating bones in the Femoropatellar joint?
The femoropatellar joint is between the patella and distal femur. The patella, a sesamoid bone incorporated into the tendon of the quadriceps femoris muscle of the anterior thigh, serves to protect this tendon from rubbing against the distal femur during knee movements.
How is Suprapatellar joint effusion treated?
Treatment of suprapatellar bursitis can include:
- resting and avoiding activities that could irritate the area, such as kneeling, jumping, or running.
- taking over-the-counter (OTC) pain medication such as ibuprofen (Motrin, Advil) and acetaminophen (Tylenol) to help relieve pain and swelling.
Is the kneecap a bone or cartilage?
Typically, by age 10 or 12, the kneecap is fully developed into a bone. A small portion of the original cap remains as cartilage, while another small portion is fatty tissue called a fat pad.
Is your knee cap bone or cartilage?
The kneecap (patella) is a small triangular bone. It is just one of the many parts that make up the knee joint. Some of the other parts are muscles, ligaments, and leg bones. The kneecap provides leverage for your muscles as they bend and straighten the leg.
What type of synovial joint is the Femoropatellar joint?
Is knee crepitus serious?
Knee crepitus can happen at any age, but it is more common as people get older. It can affect one or both knees. Crepitus is often harmless, but if it happens after a trauma or if there is pain and swelling, it may need medical attention.
What kind of joint is patellofemoral?
The patellofemoral joint is a unique and complex structure consisting of static elements (bones and ligaments) and dynamic elements (neuromuscular system). The patella has a configuration of a triangle with its apex directed inferiorly.
What is the femoral joint?
The femoral head, also called the femur head, is a bony knob at the top of the femur, or thigh bone. This ball-like part of the femur articulates, or connects, with a cup-like indent in the pelvis, forming the hip joint.
What are hip joints?
Bones of the hip joint. The femur is the upper leg bone or thigh.
